1st Edition vs Shadowless vs Unlimited: How to Tell Base Set Cards Apart

Three versions of the original Base Set look almost the same and are worth very different amounts. Here is how to tell which one you have in seconds.

BY THE PRO COLLECTIVEUPDATED

The original 1999 Base Set was printed in three main versions: 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited. They look almost the same at a glance, but the difference in value can be huge. Here is how to tell them apart.

1st Edition

Look on the left side of the card, just below the artwork. 1st Edition cards have a small black “Edition 1” stamp there. If the stamp is there, you have the first print run, the most valuable version. 1st Edition Base Set cards are also shadowless.

Shadowless

No 1st Edition stamp, but look at the right side of the artwork box. Shadowless cards have no drop shadow along the right edge of the art frame. The HP text and some lettering also look thinner and lighter than on later prints. Shadowless cards came right after 1st Edition and are worth a strong premium over Unlimited.

Unlimited

Unlimited cards have a dark drop shadow along the right side of the art frame and bolder text. They were printed in the largest numbers, so they are the most common. Clean Unlimited holos still have real value, especially graded.

A quick three step check

  1. Is there a black “Edition 1” stamp below the art on the left? That is 1st Edition.
  2. No stamp, and no shadow on the right side of the art box? That is Shadowless.
  3. No stamp, with a shadow? That is Unlimited.

Watch out for these

  • Base Set 2. A later set that reprinted many Base Set cards. Original Base Set cards have no set symbol. If you see a small set symbol near the bottom right of the art, it is from a later set.
  • Fakes. Fake 1st Edition stamps and counterfeit cards exist. Wrong colors, blurry printing, glossy card stock, or a card that feels flimsy are red flags.
  • Other WOTC sets. Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Gym, and Neo also had 1st Edition prints with the same stamp, and they are valuable too.

Condition still decides the price

A 1st Edition card with heavy wear can be worth less than a near perfect Unlimited one. If yours looks clean, read should you grade your cards before selling.

Quick answers

Where is the 1st Edition stamp on a Base Set card?

On the left side of the card, just below the bottom left corner of the artwork.

How do I know if my Base Set card is shadowless?

Look at the right edge of the artwork box. If there is no dark drop shadow there and no 1st Edition stamp, it is Shadowless.

Do you buy Unlimited Base Set cards?

We focus on high end cards, so it depends on the card and its condition. Clean holos are always worth sending.
